《吐司》应该算是一部成长电影，和很多成长电影一样，故事的最后主人公小男孩找到了自我。浓郁的英伦色彩中，故事舒缓，画面明媚，情调忧伤。这是一个关于美食的故事，关于成长的故事，也是关于失去的故事。片中的几首插曲与剧情配合的都不错。我印象最深的就是这首《if you go away》。小男孩的母亲去世以后，小男孩独自在家，打开老唱片机，音乐随之飘荡。低沉而阴郁的女声，将来未来的夜色，若有似无的回忆。充满母亲味道的晚礼服，就在小男孩的臂弯里，与他翩翩起舞。
这是一首很老的歌，从老唱片机里放出来让人有种回到七八十年代的感觉。我很喜欢这部电影的译者的翻译，让这一首歌，不会因为从英文到中文而失色，同样保留了这一份古老与忧伤情怀。

从某种角度上来说，这并不是一部顶尖的成长电影，前期剧情太过缓慢，后期剧情直走急上，海伦娜演得太过而海默又欠点火候，里面的英国美食也并没有过多吸引我的眼球。这部电影吸引人的地方在于情感的表达，无论是爸爸关灯后躲在小男孩的床头哭泣还是不会厨艺的母亲最后教小男孩做饼或是店主邻居的孩子为了激励男孩而给他的一吻。也许波特太太厨艺让人艳羡，也许小男孩学成厨艺后有足够的资本向后母炫耀，但让小男孩恋恋不忘的，永远是不会厨艺的母亲做的几片吐司。
剧中还有一首歌，《YESTERDAY WHEN I WAS YOUNG》,出现在电影末段，也是一首经典的歌曲。
