This is the story of a pair of the young brothers, Rusty James and the motorcycle boy, which is about the growing pains, the sorrow of the lower class, and the exploration of liberalism. Maybe you’ll find the reasons why I say that in this essay.
I like the film but not very much. There are three main reasons why I think so, one of which is that the brothers are quite handsome and charming. In addition, the plots full of details are brilliant. For example, when Rusty James who just got stabbed wakes up in bed, his elder brother is sitting next to him reading the chapter, Effects Of Thoughts On Health And Body in the book called As A Man Thinketh. The content is that the body is the servant of the mind, and pure thoughts build up the body in vigor, which is a great indication of the direction of the brother’s psychological change and why he love James but curly tread his wound.
Last but not least, the color of the film is highly distinctive, mainly black and white, just like the brother who is color blind saw. Although it has entered the era of color film, many directors still make black and white films. Some directors don't like this new form and think that color film is not conducive to the wonderful performance of plots and actors. A number of directors like to do experiments with new elements, such as using color to express the mood of the central character, black and white represents melancholy, and color means happiness. But we can feel the lack of expression, for instance, the scenes are boring. However, there are several excellent works that balance these points. A case in point is Rumble Fish. Only the rumble fish and James who finally struggled in the police car are colored, which highlights the theme of the film. The rumble fish in the pet shop represents the past motorcycle boy and the present James. They are full of aggression and fight all day . But when the fishes are released into the river and the living space is not so narrow, they will be very peaceful like ordinary ornamental fishes. This change of fishes suggests that social environment has a significant influence on people's behavior, not entirely due to their subjective factors.
On the other hand, that's the reasons why I don't like this movie very much. Undoubtedly, Francis Ford Coppola is a gifted director and artist, which means that his may not attach much importance to market preferences, but more to artistic exploration and expression of his thoughts. I mean, it's a classic movie, but it's not to my taste. I prefer feature films with strong visual impact and compact and exciting plot.
I like every character in it, but I prefer the motorcycle boy who is different from others. He went to California and saw the outside world, so his vision becomes opening not narrow, and he no longer gains power from fighting as before, but from his heart. Then he begins to love and appreciate everything around him equally, which means that he doesn’t pay special attention to close people, and even made James and Cassandra feel like they lost him, even if they try to understand him by imitating him or reading the same book.
As his father said, he was born in the wrong era, on the wrong side of the river. A acute perception makes him look crazy. But I think that there is nothing wrong with his feeling, which is that the society has some unknown problems. In the era when gangs are at the end of their lives and people's emotions are eroded by drugs and alcohol, he should indulge in the gangs' life in the past like James, take drugs like Cassandra, paralyze himself with alcohol like his father, live in the present like most people, but he doesn't go with the flow. He begins to find himself and awakens a new sense of freedom and equality. But under the control of the official power represented by the police and the limitation of his lower social class, how can he realize his self-worth? So in that case, in order to achieve freedom, he will certainly die. This death outcome is a two-way choice. He takes the initiative to commit a crime and the police choose to shoot. But we also saw James following his last wishes and finally riding his motorcycle to the seaside. One man fell, but the other stood up, which means hope still there, and society is slowly moving forward. It implies that the progress of the times always comes at the cost of blood. Therefore I think the people like the motorcycle boy who is forward-thinking and unique will always belong to the future, never to the past or the present.
In conclusion, Rumble Fish is a film worth watching, which is not only for teenagers, but also for the whole society, which can educate and guide their growth, and bring people deep thinking about liberalism. Coppola has directed many films, some of which are famous, such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, some of which have a poor box office, such as Rumble Fish. In my opinion, they are all wonderful, but some of them are in line with the public's preference and some are not.
