Richard Fleischer repeatedly turned down Dino De Laurentiis' overtures to direct the film. While in New Orleans, he picks up a wife, Blanche, a "bed wench," Ellen, and a Mandingo slave, Mede, whom he trains to be a bare-knuckle fighting champion.
