Plot Summary:Peter has been out of work for some time, and distress has fallen upon his family. His wife, Jane, endeavors to get work, but in vain. Their little boy George, of course, does not understand the trouble of his parents, and, having seen a fine Mr. Punch in the window of a toy store, begs his mother to buy the doll for him. The mother is penniless, and is obliged to resist the child's pleadings. A little later, however, little George falls ill, deprivation has undermined his health, and in his delirium, the child dreams of Mr. Punch, and calls continually for him. The mother is heartbroken, and in her crazed anguish she rushes out of the house, and entering a toy shop, watches her opportunity to hide \"Mr. Punch\" under her shawl. She leaves the store hurriedly, but she had been observed by the proprietor, who quickly follows her. Jane rushes home and places the longed-for toy in the arms of the child, and is beside herself with joy when she sees that the possession of his one desire, seems to restore the child to the normal; the fever seems to have disappeared! At this moment the Toy Dealer enters, accompanied by two policemen, who immediately place Jane under arrest for theft. Just then, the husband returns, bringing the good news that he has found work; when he learns what has happened, he is very angry with his wife, for he cannot understand how she could bring herself to steal, even for the child's sake. The Merchant has been looking an all this while, and now understands the whole situation; he is a kind-hearted man, and, pitying the poor mother, he orders the policeman to free her, and leave the premises. At this great and unexpected kindness, the wife falls, weeping, into her husband's arms! The Toy Merchant then tells the little fellow that he may keep the \"Mr. Punch,\" and departs, after having received an affectionate kiss from the grateful child!
