Plot Summary:In early America plantation owners exploited the labor of enslaved African-Americans to become wealthy in an agricultrual economy. Chained to the Land, an Electronic Field Trip to Colonial Williamsburg, examines the economic, social, and racial realities of plantation life. A master facing a financial crisis is forced to sell some of his slaves in order to save his plantation, lifestyle, and reputation and, in doing so, tears apart the slaves' families.
