Plot Summary:The Darrells and the Barnetts live in the same town. The Darrells are wealthy; the Barnetts are farm people in humble circumstances. Ray Darrell and Polly Barnett were sweethearts in their youth, but as time passes both are sent away to school. Mr. Darrll is a railroad builder and desires to secure the property on which the Barnett homestead is situated. The railroad is built through the land, but the Barnetts refuse to sell their old homestead for the figure offered. On the completion of the railroad, the Barnett en a lunchroom near the temporary depot and at first are quite successful. Polly returns from school and Ray from college. Unable o purchase the Barnett site which they desire for a new depot, the Darrells build their own lunchroom across the tracks and the Brnetts' business falls off, until Polly takes the kitchen in hand and soon brings trade back to its former standing. Ray Drrell, not knowing that Polly is the cook, suggests that the only way to best the Barnetts is to kidnap their cook. He joins the expedition and come upon Polly. A compromise is reached: the Barnetts receive almost the figure they originally demanded, and Ray wins Polly as his bride.
