Plot Summary:In old New England, in the days of witchcraft, the austere Puritans looked askance on anything that resembled magic, and Carlos, as the stranger in Gloucester, who by simple means cures a young girl of her indisposition, wins the enmity of the populace and the love of his patient. Carlos is tried for witchcraft, and condemned to be banished, with the further injunction that if he should return he should be burned at the stake. Ruth Windsor, the following day, seeking her lover, and failing to find him, throws herself in despair into the sea. This act is seen by Carlos, who rescues her, and returns her to a spot near her home. He is seen, arrested and re-tried, and about to be burned at the stake, when a message from the governor of the colony arrives, repealing the laws against witchcraft.
